Fall can be the most rewarding and the most challenging time to grow a garden in middle Tennessee. Getting things planted while it’s still hot outside and the bug pressure is rampant is the biggest hurdle to overcome. Luckily, getting high quality starts makes this a lot easier! To extend your harvest make sure you’re watching the weather at night and consider investing in a row cover for frost protection or even just an old sheet can work.
We hope you’ll try a fall garden with us this year!
Brassica flat
A fun mix of all of our favorite fall brassicas! Here’s what the flat includes —
cabbages (a mix of caraflex, deadon, and farao varieties), kale, collard greens, broccoli, dandelion, romanesco, chard, and brussel sprouts
A few growing tips
Be sure to protect these plants from bug pressure! Check your leaves daily (top and bottom) and remove by hand or protect them with netting.
We recommend 12” - 18” spacing on all of these plants so make sure you have some room!
SALAD FLAT
Is there any salad better than a fall salad? These greens love the cooler weather and can last quite a while when harvested properly. Here’s what the flat includes —
head lettuces, little gem lettuces, butter lettuces, spinach, mustard greens, pac choi asian greens, arugula
A few growing tips
Lettuces hold up to bug pressure better than the brassicas. However, the deer love them!'
You can generally plant these much closer together than your brassicas. These require 6” - 12” spacing depending on variety.
Harvest outer leaves so that the plants will keep producing or cut whole heads if you prefer!
Herb Flat
Maybe our favorite things to grow in the fall! These herbs thrive in the cooler weather and will keep producing for quite a while! Here’s what the flat includes —
dill, cilantro, parsley, scallions
A few growing tips
Plant these close! About 4” is plenty of room.
Stem/leaf harvest for a longer growing/harvest window.
